I am a fifty-something autonomous woman who came up through corporate South Africa in Finance and Human Resources wearing six inch heels and power suits.
Weekly hair and beauty treatments, or The Worx as we called it, were my mainstay.
When I say I did little myself for my self-image for 20+ years, I am not kidding.
For 3 to 6 hours once a week, I was pampered, preserved and most of all, glamorised.
But as always, life happens!
In 2004, after three major industrial actions and a potato in the exhaust of my brand new car that blew the vehicle’s head gasket, I burnt out.
For more than a decade I did no more than indulge my passion for the great outdoors through grounds keeping and 4X4 trips.
I HAD BECOME COMFORTABLY RUSTIC!
My world had narrowed to a needle point and corporate SA moved on.
Early in 2018 I hit a crossroads and made some very BIG decisions all about me, myself & I.
So decisions made, I did what survivor’s do;
I went back to school,
I went back to the salon, and
I got divorced.
However by going back to school, I realised that seeking out who I used to be was not what I needed to do to move forward.
For decades I had sat observing in a salon or spa, meeting some truly awesome people with mad skills and by once again doing The Worx, I realised what I wanted.
So when opportunity knocked, I jumped.
The old adage that hairdresser’s live pay cheque to pay cheque is mostly true.
Most cosmetologists do it for the love of creation, art and the sense of achievement in helping someone like me realise my very best self.
The only way to achieve financial success as a hairdresser, beautician or nail technician is by acquiring all the skills needed to own your own business.
The Blue Fire Centre aims to provide the venue for self-employment and to provide a safe environment to our industry’s very best so that they too can start or grow their own business whilst acquiring those skills.
We do this through support, encouragement and by marketing their excellence.
We do this so that one day, they too may pay this opportunity forward!
